Reading/Phonics

At Lambton Primary School, we use a scheme called Read Write Inc (RWI). This scheme uses a systematic synthetic  phonics approach. This method teaches reading through the identification of sounds and graphemes. Phonics is about using skills for reading and spelling. Learning phonics will help your child to become a good reader and writer.

Children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 receive phonics teaching every day through Read Write Inc.

All children are encouraged to take home reading books and library books to improve their skills and to share books with adults at home. Children should read daily with an adult.

We have developed our reading scheme to match the phonics that the children are learning. This means that the children are successful when reading, and this develops a love of reading. Children read books from a wide variety of publishers.

As children move through school, they use the Accelerated Reader programme.  When children read a book they complete a quiz about the text to develop comprehension skills. The children enjoy receiving points when they complete the quizzes.
